Why Chinese Don’t Like Number 4? Unlucky?




Due to the Chinese language, the number 4 has a similar sound to “die” so the Chinese think the number 4 is unlucky.


In Mandarin

Number 4 is pronounced as sì, while die is pronounced as sí


In Cantonese

Number 4 is pronounced as sei3, while die is pronounced as sei2


In Hokkien

Number 4 is pronounced as xì, while die is pronounced as xì


How Chinese Replace Number 4?

Chinese will replace number 4 with 3A. You can see number 3A in hotels, residential properties, number plates, and even lifts.
